                             INSPECTION STANDARD                              MASK, GAS, ND MARK V


Visual and Dimensional Inspection (classification of defects as per Standard MIL-STD-105)
Critical Defects:
1. Gas Mask incomplete.
2. Pneumatic seal punctured.
3. Canister filter punctured.
4. Outlet valve damaged.
5. Lens surface not free of cracks, splits, or holes.
6. Rubber apron assembly not as specified.
Major Defects: (sampling as per specification)
101. Inlet check valve damaged or incorrectly assembled.
102. Speech diaphragm body and retainer ring threads not as specified.
103. Rubber material not free of sun checking.
104. Metal surface finish not as specified.
105. Rubber face blank dimensions not as specified.
106. Canister holder location not as specified.
107. Air deflector tube location not as specified.
108. Speech diaphragm outlet valve assembly dimensions not as specified.
109. Speech diaphragm cellophane assembly not as specified.
110. Buckle tabs and buckles not located and not reinforced as specified.
111. Head harness dimensions, strap locations and reinforcement not as required.
112. Canister assembly not as specified.
113. Canister container assembly (for metal containers) marking and coating not as specified.
114. Mask carrier material and dimensions not as required.
115. Inner and outer rubber lip (lens) not as specified.
Minor Defects:
201. Metal components (composition) not as specified.
202. Blooming of rubber (non-sulphur).
203. Color of rubber not as specified.
204. Color of fabric in carrier not as specified.
205. Color of fabric in canister not white or natural.
206. Face blank contour over peripheral seal (exterior) not as specified.
207. Head harness reinforcement not completely sealed on edges.
208. Marking; mask, canister and canister container missing or illegible.
Inspection Testing: (sampling as per specification)
Rubber Physical Tests:
Tensile strength prior to and after aging.
Elongation prior to and after aging.
Permanent set, prior to aging.
Hardness prior to aging.
Tensile at 200 percent elongation prior to and after aging.
Compression set.
Tear resistance.
Rubber Toxicity Tests: (at a Government laboratory)
Toxicity in excess of acceptable limits, see laboratory report.
Test required on preproduction sample.
Pneumatic Tube(peripheral seal)
Inflation.
Thickness of cut sections.
Lens and Face Piece Assembly
Leakage between lens and rubber.
Light transmission before heat exposure.
Resistance to flexing at cold temperature.
Deformation caused by aging.
Light transmission after heat exposure.
Lens to rubber bond strength.
Speech Diaphragm Assembly
Diaphragm strength not as specified.
Diaphragm leakage more than allowed.
Leakage between diaphragm assembly and face piece.
Outlet valve (rubber) leakage more than allowed.
Outlet valve resistance to air flow.
Mask(without canisters)
Resistance to air flow.
Leakage.
Head Harness
Strength of reinforced rubber.
Canister Tests:
Canister apron leakage more than allowed.
Canister gas life after rough handling less than required.
Canister resistance to air flow less or more than allowed.
Canister fill (impregnated charcoal) not as specified.
Chemical particle size not as specified.
Smoke penetration.
Smoke penetration after rough handling.
Security of rubber apron in canister.
Moisture in canister.
Canister Holder:
Security of holder in face piece.
Canister Package
Water submergence to test seal:
Referenced specifications and standards of the issue in effect on date of invitation for bids shall apply.
